Early Warning System Provides Critical Alerts

Iridium ConnectedTM two-way communication service provides early warning alerts to citizens in flood-prone area

Sutron Corporation

“Sutron recommended the Iridium® system as the most economical, the most reliable and the best suited system for Bhutan's remote, rugged terrain and extreme climate conditions. Other providers simply couldn’t provide the same level of communications needed for this project.”

Ashish Raval, Senior Vice President, Sutron Corporation

  • The Challenge
  • In 1994, the Kingdom of Bhutan experienced the worst occurrence of major flooding around their glacial lakes, claiming 22 lives and causing massive property and livestock damage.
  • The flood was the catalyst for the government of Bhutan to establish an Early Warning System.
  • The Solution
  • Sutron Corporation, a worldwide leader in providing real time data collection, remote monitoring systems and hydrological/ meteorological monitoring equipment, was awarded the project in March of 2010.
  • Sutron teamed up with Iridium to provide the telemetry backbone for Bhutan's GLOF Early Warning Project. Iridium provides two-way communications, essential for the functions of siren control, data on demand, station diagnostics and maintenance.

The Impact

The Bhutan-based Early Warning System is designed to to rapidly warn citizens of impending danger so they can take immediate action. It is anticipated that this system will be the first of many early warning systems for the Kingdom of Bhutan
