My handset seems to stop tranferring data while connected. How do I fix this problem?

Terminate the connection. Cycle power on your Iridium phone to reset it, then reinitiate the connection.

My phone is registered but I can't establish a dial-up data connection. How do I fix this problem?

1) Verify that the phone is displaying good signal strength. 2) Confirm that your SIM card is provisioned for data. If in doubt, contact your service provider. 3) Check the software version by pressing *#91# on the keypad. The Motorola 9500 must show software version INC0620 or later. The Motorola 9505 must show software version LAC109G. The Motorola 9520 must show software version RAC0620 or later. 4) Check the cable connections. 5) Check to see that the dialed phone number is accurate and that it was dialed in international format (00 + Country Code + Area Code + Phone Number). You can verify that you are dialing the correct number by dialing the number as a voice call from your Iridium phone. You should hear your ISP's modem tones if you have dialed properly. Verify that your settings have not changed (modem properties, phone number, user name, password, etc.). 6) Confirm that your Iridium handset is dialing: while dialing it should blink the message, "Data Call in Progress." If it does not, cycle the power on the phone to reset it.

My handset says "Data Call in Progress," but nothing seems to happen. What is causing this problem?

There may be a problem with your networking properties or a problem at the remote end. If you are using dial-up networking to connect to a LAN or ISP, verify that the networking properties are set according to the requirements of the LAN or ISP. If they are and your problem persists, contact your ISP or remote end administrator.

Why do I sometimes have difficulty completing dial-up data calls to countries outside of North America?

You may experience difficulty when placing dial-up data calls to some parts of the world, including (but not limited to): the Middle East, Southeast Asia, China, India, Russia and Taiwan. End-to-end data call quality and the probability of connection depends on the ability of modems at the Iridium gateway to synchronize with modems at the termination location. Modem synchronization is affected by the voice compression used by international telephony carriers. This compression can alter modem tones, reducing connection speeds and sometimes causing dropped connections. This PSTN connection quality issue is not unique to Iridium data services; it would be the same if you made a data call to these locations from your home computer. If dialing to non-Phoenix area numbers, we recommend adding AT+CBST=6,0,1 to the modem initialization settings to slow down the bearer service to make the link more stable.

Why do I have difficulty maintaining a connection to certain ISPs?

To improve connection speed and reliability when dialing your ISP, we recommend choosing an ISP access number in the greater Phoenix, Arizona area (area codes 602, 480 and 623) to reduce the PSTN distance between the Iridium gateway and the ISP location. If you aren’t using the DI number or calling a Phoenix-area number, then we recommend adding AT+CBST=6,0,1 to the modem initialization settings to slow down the bearer service to make the link more stable.

Why is web browsing faster in Direct Internet 3 than Direct Internet 2?

When loading a web page, Direct Internet 3 will first load images at a low resolution so that other web page content can be quickly loaded and accessed. Once all contents of the web page have been loaded, Direct Internet 3 continues to run in the background to provide higher resolution versions of the images. Also, when web pages are traditionally downloaded, an HTTP connection is initiated and a HTTP request is sent for each object in a sequential manner. That is, an HTTP request is only sent after the previous HTTP has been completely received. Direct Internet 3, however, uses new technology that allows it to send multiple HTTP requests concurrently. This provides Direct Internet 3 with a superior web browsing experience over Direct Internet 2.

If you require special ports for your custom application, please ask your Service Provider about our RUDICS service offering.

Satellite Network

Can I use my satellite phone indoors?

Iridium phones need a clear line-of-sight to the satellites; terrain, foliage or structures (such as buildings) may affect signal quality. If you must use an Iridium phone indoors, we recommend consulting the antenna manufacturer/reseller for installation instructions or guidelines. Note: Although custom cables can be made, you must ensure that there is no greater than 3dB of loss, including connectors, from end to end in your cabling. In addition, there must be one antenna per each Iridium phone or channel and the frequency must be 1621 MHz.

Does Iridium support Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP)?

Although we have looked into Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), the transcoding between the Iridium codec and the VoIP codec causes voice quality to become very poor. For this reason, we are not considering VoIP at this time.

How do I access information about the health of the satellite network?

As a matter of policy, Iridium does not release this information. However, there is an active amateur satellite-observing community that keeps close track of the Iridium constellation through direct observations and publicly-available sources of information. While Iridium can neither endorse nor validate any third-party information, you may wish to consult such sources (e.g., http://www.rod.sladen.org.uk/iridium.htm).

Will my satellite phone still function at higher altitudes?

The specified altitude for normal system operation with 15 db of link margin is 13 km above mean sea level (MSL). If the link margin is reduced, the altitude can increase.  Each satellite transmits and receives L-band signals in a cone shape that originates at the satellite and is projected onto the surface of the Earth. As you move higher in altitude, the cone becomes narrower and you will no longer have continuous coverage because the cones created by the satellites no longer intersect.
